我很榮幸能歡迎各位前來參與第32屆世界遺產委員會，這屆委員會將於2008年7月2日至10日在加拿大的魁北克舉行。
《世界遺產公約》或許稱得上是全球最廣為認可且最具成效的保護建制，啟動了關於保護人類共有遺產的相關活動。自公約從1972年採行以來，激勵了跨文化對話與前所未見的各層次國際合作。當我們在歷屆世界遺產委員會中推舉來自全世界各地區不同的代表時，我們也是在頌揚自己能將所擁有的多元文化和傑作，通過集體的良善，達成世界文化遺產與自然遺產的保護工作。經由與他人共同保護及共享各地的世界遺產，當能促進對於全球文化與生態體系多樣化的理解。同時在永續發展與人類社群福祉上，世界遺產亦能有所貢獻並成為其中的一項關鍵力量。
在第32屆世界遺產委員會當中，加拿大將針對吸引年輕人參與的工作進行特殊的努力。我們所擁有的世界遺產的長期保護工作，實仰賴我們的後代子孫願意克紹箕裘，承繼管理責任。因此吸引今日的年輕人參與，將能具體形塑明日的決策者風格。如同我們本地的原住民同胞所提醒的－我們並非從我們的先祖繼承，而是從我們的孩子手中借用這個地球。
身為世界遺產委員會主席，我熱誠地邀請各位前來加拿大。我與我的伙伴們將盡最大的努力讓您此次造訪敝國的旅程，成為一次難忘的回憶。

Welcome From the Chair
It is with pleasure that I welcome you to the 32nd Session of the World Heritage Committee which will take place from 2 to 10 July 2008 in Quebec City, Canada.
The World Heritage Convention is perhaps the most widely recognized and effective conservation instrument in the world, mobilizing a global movement for the protection of the shared heritage of humanity. Since its adoption in 1972, the Convention has encouraged intercultural dialogue and unprecedented levels of international co-operation. When we take our places during Committee sessions as representatives from different regions of the world, we celebrate our diverse cultures and work towards the collective good, the protection of the world's cultural and natural heritage. World Heritage Sites that are protected and shared with others can promote an understanding of the diversity of the world's cultures and ecosystems. They can also be a vital force in contributing to the sustainability and well-being of our communities.
Canada is making a special effort to engage young people in the work of the 32nd Session of the World Heritage Committee. The long-term conservation of our World Heritage Sites depends on the will of future generations to take over stewardship responsibilities. Engaging today's youth will shape the decision-makers of tomorrow. Our indigenous peoples remind us that we do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.
As Chair of the World Heritage Committee, I welcome you warmly to Canada. My colleagues and I will do our utmost to make your visit to our country a memorable one.
